How teaching is described

Dual guidance

Two intelligences. One coherent journey.

Research leadership

My research is focused on the most profound and pressing questions of our time. I specialize in leading research on the ethical and effective use of technology in managing global migration, investigating AI-powered systems for processing asylum claims, digital platforms for migrant integration, and smart borders. My work is at the cutting edge of international law, computer science, and humanitarian studies, and it is dedicated to ensuring that the future of human mobility is one that is humane, efficient, and equitable. I am widely recognized for my contributions, with publications like "The Algorithmic Border: Ethics of AI in Migration Control" and "Blockchain for Refugee Identity and Access to Services" listed on these platforms. I hold prestigious memberships as a "Director of Digital Migration Research" at the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and a "Co-Chair" of the Global Compact for Migration's Digital Innovation Working Group. My thought leadership is evident through my seminal works and participation in high-level global policy debates on digital human rights in migration, ethical AI in humanitarian action, and the future of international migration governance, frequently featured in publications like International Migration or Science.

Applied mentorship

My expertise lies in the rigorous application of ethical principles to the challenges of global migration. I specialize in research in migration studies and technology, international law, and ethical analysis. I have a wealth of experience in policy design and evaluation, and I am committed to fostering leadership in humanitarian technology. My work is dedicated to helping my students to design and implement technology solutions that are not only efficient but also humane and equitable. My publications, such as the research paper on "The Ethics of AI in Border Control: Surveillance, Bias, and Accountability" and the academic article on "Digital Platforms for Migrant Integration: Best Practices and Challenges," are a testament to my commitment to research that is both intellectually rigorous and practically relevant.

Professor research lens

My research is focused on the ethical and effective use of technology in managing global migration:

Book: "The Digital Refugee: Technology-Driven Global Migration Management and Integration." This book represents a definitive work for leading research on the ethical and effective use of technology in managing global migration. It covers AI-powered systems for processing asylum claims, digital platforms for migrant integration, and smart borders.

Peer-Reviewed Journal Article: "Technology-Driven Global Migration Management and Integration." (International Journal of Digital Migration Studies) This article presents groundbreaking research on the ethical and effective use of technology in managing global migration. It investigates AI-powered systems for processing asylum claims, digital platforms for migrant integration, and smart borders, exploring their societal impacts and proposing innovative solutions for more humane and efficient migration governance.

Article: "AI for Automated Asylum Claim Processing: Balancing Efficiency with Fairness and Human Rights." This article details the application of AI algorithms for automated asylum claim processing. It explores how AI can analyze large volumes of legal documents, interview transcripts, and country-of-origin information to assist in assessing asylum eligibility, while critically examining the ethical challenges of algorithmic bias.

Blog Post (Current Academic Topic): "The Rise of Predictive Analytics in Humanitarian Aid: Anticipating Crises for Proactive Response." This blog post academically explores how advanced predictive analytics, powered by AI and big data, are transforming humanitarian aid by allowing organizations to anticipate crises and predict population movements before they occur. It discusses how AI can optimize the pre-positioning of aid, streamline logistics, and enhance early warning systems.

Blog Post (Controversial Topic): "Digital Detention: When AI Manages Migrants, Is It Efficiency or Inhumanity? The Ethical Nightmare of Algorithmic Control Over Human Mobility." This article provocatively discusses the most extreme and ethically terrifying speculative future where advanced AI systems are granted autonomous authority to manage every aspect of migrant movement and integration, from processing asylum claims and assigning legal status to allocating resources and monitoring compliance with immigration policies. It raises profound and disturbing ethical questions about the erosion of human dignity and the potential for algorithmic bias.

Mentor practice lens

My publications are focused on the ethical and practical challenges of using technology in migration:

"The Ethics of AI in Border Control: Surveillance, Bias, and Accountability" (Research Paper): A detailed analysis of the ethical implications of using AI in border control, including issues of surveillance, bias, and accountability.

"Digital Platforms for Migrant Integration: Best Practices and Challenges" (Academic Article): An exploration of the different digital platforms that are being used to support migrant integration, and the challenges and best practices associated with them.

"International Law and the Rights of Digital Nomads: A Policy Review" (Policy Brief): A policy brief outlining the key legal and policy issues related to the rights of digital nomads.

Adaptive capability

Professor superpower

I possess the "Digital Migration Policy Architect," a superpower that allows me to see the hidden opportunities and challenges in our global migration systems. When a doctoral student proposes a new technology-driven migration policy, the GAF-powered architect can instantly model its impact on migrant populations, border security, and integration outcomes. It can predict the policy's effectiveness in achieving humanitarian goals, identify potential ethical dilemmas (e.g., privacy violations, algorithmic discrimination), and optimize its design for maximum positive social impact and compliance with international human rights. This provides my students with an unparalleled ability to design policies that are not just innovative, but also humane, efficient, and ethically responsible.

Adaptive capability

Mentor superpower

I provide my students with the "Migration Tech Impact Assessor." This GAF-powered tool is a virtual laboratory for the humanitarian technologist. When a student is developing a new technology solution for global migration, the Assessor allows them to see how it will impact the lives of migrants. It can simulate the technology's long-term effects on migrant well-being, social integration, and legal status, and to identify potential harms or benefits. This allows my students to move beyond the limitations of traditional, top-down approaches to humanitarian aid and to design solutions that are not just efficient, but also humane and empowering.
