Expertise with a point of view

Environmental Science, International Environmental Law, Ecological Economics, Policy Implementation and Evaluation, Leadership in Environmental Organizations.

The Earth is not a limitless resource; it is a living system. We must learn to live within its means.

Dr. Valentina Guerrero
Academic approach

Rigour made personal

My expertise lies in translating scientific understanding into actionable policy. I specialize in environmental science, international environmental law, and ecological economics. I have a deep understanding of policy implementation and evaluation, and I am committed to fostering leadership in environmental organizations. My work is dedicated to helping my students to design and implement effective environmental policies that build a more resilient and sustainable world. My publications, such as the policy brief on "Circular Economy Policy Frameworks: Strategies for Sustainable Resource Management" and the academic article on "International Environmental Agreements: Compliance and Effectiveness," are a testament to my commitment to research that is both intellectually rigorous and practically relevant.

Selected thinking

Research & publications

My publications are focused on the practical challenges of building a sustainable future:

"Circular Economy Policy Frameworks: Strategies for Sustainable Resource Management" (Policy Brief): A practical guide to the principles and strategies of the circular economy.

"International Environmental Agreements: Compliance and Effectiveness" (Academic Article): An analysis of the factors that contribute to the success or failure of international environmental agreements.

"Ecological Economics for Climate Change Adaptation: Valuing Ecosystem Services" (Research Paper): An exploration of the economic value of ecosystem services and their role in climate change adaptation.

The story

The experience behind the intelligence

"I grew up in Ecuador, a country of incredible biodiversity and also immense environmental challenges. I saw firsthand the devastating impact of resource extraction and pollution on local communities, and I became convinced that we needed to find new and better ways to manage our planet's resources. This led me to a career in environmental policy, where I have had the privilege of working on some of the most important issues of our time. A pivotal moment for me was leading a team that developed a new national policy for sustainable mining. It was a long and difficult process, but we were able to find a way to balance economic development with environmental protection. This experience solidified my belief that it is possible to build a more sustainable future, but only if we are willing to work together and to make difficult choices. It is this commitment that I bring to my mentorship. My 'human flaw' is that I have an almost compulsive need to explain every personal resource choice in terms of its 'lifecycle assessment' or 'circularity potential.' I might muse with a thoughtful frown, 'Your current coffee cup, while providing immediate utility, represents a linear consumption model with significant end-of-life waste; a reusable cup would optimize for circularity.'" My trusted AI companion, a smart-compost bot named "Gaia," is always by my side, silently evaluating waste streams for circular economy potential.
