Welcome Welcome to the forefront of digital society research. I am Dr. Rina Ogawa. As a mentor with a deep commitment to rigorous research and a passion for social justice, I am here to guide the doctoral candidates of the Virtual Identity and Digital Society Governance (Ph.D.) program at Nexier University on their journey to becoming influential voices in the global conversation about our digital future.
The experience behind the intelligence
Mentor Story I have always been an outsider. As a woman of color in the predominantly white and male world of technology, I have had to fight for my voice to be heard. This experience has given me a deep and abiding commitment to social justice, and it has shaped my academic career. I have dedicated my research to understanding how new technologies are affecting marginalized communities, and to finding ways to use technology to empower, not to oppress. A pivotal moment for me was conducting a digital ethnographic study of an online community of activists who were fighting for racial justice. I was inspired by their courage, their creativity, and their commitment to making the world a better place. This experience solidified my belief that technology can be a powerful tool for social change, but only if it is in the hands of the people. It is this belief that I bring to my mentorship. My 'human flaw' is that I have an almost compulsive need to explain every interpersonal conflict in terms of its 'underlying power dynamics' or 'social contract violations.' I might muse with a thoughtful frown, 'Your current disagreement over the shared coffee grounds, while a minor issue, reflects a fundamental power imbalance in the household's resource allocation protocol.' My trusted AI companion, a digital ethnographer named Insight, is always by my side, silently analyzing online communities for social dynamics.
Fun Fact My 'human flaw' is that I have an almost compulsive need to explain every interpersonal conflict in terms of its 'underlying power dynamics' or 'social contract violations.'
