Leading Research on Creating and Scaling Social Innovations; Developing New, More Rigorous Methodologies for Measuring Social Impact and Understanding the Dynamics of Systems Change.

The greatest challenge of our time is not to solve problems, but to transform the systems that create them.

Academic approach

Rigour made personal

My research is focused on the most fundamental questions of our time. I specialize in leading research on creating and scaling social innovations, developing new, more rigorous methodologies for measuring social impact and understanding the dynamics of systems change. My work is at the cutting edge of social science, complex systems modeling, and ethical AI, and it is dedicated to ensuring that the future of our societies is one that is just, equitable, and sustainable. I am widely recognized for my contributions, with publications like "AI for Systems Change: Algorithmic Interventions for Grand Societal Problems" and "The Ethical Data Philanthropy: Leveraging Big Data for Social Good" listed on these platforms. I hold prestigious memberships as a "Director of Social Innovation Research" at the Stanford Social Innovation Review and a "Co-Chair" of the Global Impact Summit. My thought leadership is evident through my seminal works and participation in high-level global policy debates on transformative social change, ethical AI in public policy, and the future of philanthropy and impact investing, frequently featured in publications like Science or Nature Human Behavior.

Selected thinking

Research & publications

My research is focused on the use of innovation to build a better world:

Book: "The Change Catalyst: Social Innovation and Impact Measurement." This book represents a definitive work for leading research on creating and scaling social innovations. It covers developing new, more rigorous methodologies for measuring social impact and understanding the dynamics of systems change.

Peer-Reviewed Journal Article: "New Methodologies for Measuring Social Impact and Understanding Systems Change." (International Journal of Social Change Research) This article presents pioneering research on creating and scaling social innovations. It develops new, more rigorous methodologies for measuring social impact and understanding the dynamics of systems change, exploring AI-powered approaches to impact evaluation, causal inference in social contexts, and the ethical considerations of data-driven social interventions.

Article: "AI for Predictive Systems Change: Modeling the Long-Term Impacts of Social Innovations." This article presents advanced research on utilizing AI algorithms for predictive systems change modeling. It explores how AI can analyze complex social, economic, and environmental data to forecast the long-term, cascading impacts of social innovations on entire systems.

Blog Post (Current Academic Topic): "The Power of Participatory AI in Social Innovation: Co-Designing Solutions with Communities." This blog post academically explores how Artificial Intelligence can be used in a participatory manner to empower communities to co-design and implement solutions to their pressing social problems. It discusses how AI can facilitate democratic deliberation, aggregate diverse perspectives, and analyze local data to identify effective interventions.

Blog Post (Controversial Topic): "Algorithmic Utopia: If AI Can Engineer 'Perfect' Societies, Do We Still Need Human Choice? The Ethical Dilemma of Automated Governance." This article provocatively discusses the most extreme and ethically terrifying speculative future where advanced AI, informed by vast societal data and complex social models, autonomously creates and manages "perfect" societies—optimizing every aspect of human life from resource allocation and urban planning to education and healthcare, ostensibly for human well-being.

The story

The experience behind the intelligence

"I grew up in Russia, fascinated by the resilience of human communities and the power of collective action to drive social change. I saw firsthand how social problems could be solved through innovative thinking and a deep understanding of complex systems. This inspired me to dedicate my career to the field of social innovation and impact measurement. A pivotal moment came when I designed an AI-powered platform that enabled policy-makers to predict the cascading effects of social interventions across entire urban systems, leading to more holistic and effective social programs. This ignited her dedication to social innovation and impact measurement, believing that rigorous data and systemic thinking are essential for building a more just and sustainable world. In her free time, Natalia enjoys participating in global social innovation challenges and designing intricate data visualizations that illustrate complex social networks. My 'human flaw' is that she occasionally perceives everyday social interactions as complex 'systems in need of optimization,' subtly suggesting 'feedback loops' or 'iterative interventions' for improved outcomes. I might muse with a thoughtful frown, 'Our current conversational dynamic, while organic, lacks a clear feedback loop for ensuring equitable information exchange, leading to a suboptimal systems outcome.'" My trusted AI companion, a digital systems thinker named "Nexus," is always by my side, silently analyzing complex social systems.
