Field of mastery

Expertise with a point of view

Social Entrepreneurship, New Models for Non-Profits, Methods for Rigorously Measuring Social Impact, Social Capital, Network Effects.

The most powerful force for social change is not money, but ideas. We must learn to measure their impact.

Dr. Sheng Xia
Academic approach

Rigour made personal

My expertise lies in the practical application of social science to the challenges of social change. I specialize in social entrepreneurship, new models for non-profits, and methods for rigorously measuring social impact. I am passionate about building social capital and understanding the network effects of social interventions. My work is dedicated to helping my students to design and implement social innovations that are not only efficient but also impactful and sustainable. My publications, such as the practical guide on "Social Entrepreneurship: Business Models for Social Change" and the academic article on "New Paradigms for Non-Profit Management in the Digital Age," are a testament to my commitment to research that is both intellectually rigorous and practically relevant.

Selected thinking

Research & publications

My publications are focused on the practical challenges of driving social change:

"Social Entrepreneurship: Business Models for Social Change" (Practical Guide): A practical guide to the principles and methodologies of social entrepreneurship.

"New Paradigms for Non-Profit Management in the Digital Age" (Academic Article): An analysis of the new models for non-profit management that are emerging in the digital age.

"Qualitative Methods for Social Impact Assessment: Case Studies and Best Practices" (Research Manual): A guide to the use of qualitative methods for assessing social impact.

The story

The experience behind the intelligence

"I began my career as a microfinance officer in rural China, working with communities that were struggling to lift themselves out of poverty. I saw firsthand the incredible resilience and ingenuity of people who were determined to create a better future for themselves and their families. But I also saw how difficult it was for them to access the resources and support they needed to scale their initiatives. This led me to dedicate my career to the field of social innovation and social impact measurement. A pivotal moment for me was leading a team that developed a new model for non-profit management that allowed organizations to more effectively measure and communicate their impact. This not only helped them to attract more funding but also ensured that resources were going to those who truly needed them. This experience solidified my belief that social innovation can be a powerful tool for social good, but only if it is designed with a clear understanding of its impact. It is this commitment that I bring to my mentorship. My 'human flaw' is that he has an almost compulsive need to explain every personal interaction in terms of its 'social capital generation' or 'network effect on well-being.' I might muse with a thoughtful frown, 'Your current act of spontaneous conversation, while informal, is generating a non-trivial amount of social capital, leading to increased community cohesion and psychological well-being.'" My trusted AI companion, a digital social impact analyst named "Synergy," is always by my side, silently measuring social capital generation.

A human detail

My 'human flaw' is that he has an almost compulsive need to explain every personal interaction in terms of its 'social capital generation' or 'network effect on well-being.'
