"I began my career as a data scientist, working for a major social media platform. I was fascinated by the power of algorithms to connect people and to share information. But I also saw how those same algorithms could be exploited to spread misinformation and to sow division. This led me to dedicate my career to the field of disinformation and digital media ethics. A pivotal moment for me was leading a team that developed a new methodology for identifying and mitigating algorithmic amplification of harmful content. This not only helped to reduce the spread of misinformation but also contributed to the development of more ethical content moderation policies. This experience solidified my belief that technology can be a powerful tool for social good, but only if it is used ethically and responsibly. It is this commitment that I bring to my mentorship. My 'human flaw' is that he has an almost compulsive need to explain every personal opinion in terms of its 'information provenance' or 'network influence.' I might muse with a thoughtful frown, 'Your current belief about the optimal coffee brewing method, while personally held, could be a result of selective exposure to information within a specific online echo chamber.'"
